  Membrane Principle | Models

MVS Membrane Nitrogen generators are increasingly being used in the market for a variety of applications and as the membrane technology is maturing, Membrane based generators are finding wide spread acceptance.

Membrane principle
The Nitrogen separation Membrane is a cylindrical bundle of hollow fiber fine tubes made from polymer material. Each bundle contains several million fibers. Air enters at one end and flows to the opposite end through the fiber bore. In essence, the membranes act like a filter with no moving parts and continuously generate nitrogen at selected flow rate and purity.

Pressurized air is fed through one end of the Membrane. Gas separation takes place through fiber wall. Fast permeating gases such as Oxygen, CO2 and water vapor quickly diffuse through the fiber wall and exit at atmospheric pressure through the vent port on the outer side of the Membrane separator. Nitrogen being a slower gas does not permeate through the fiber wall as quickly under flowing conditions and is collected as the Nitrogen product gas. It flows down the bore of the fiber and exits at 0.3 to 1 Bar lower than the pressure of the inlet compressed air.

The airflow rate determines how much undiffused oxygen remains with the Nitrogen gas. The Nitrogen product gas is extremely dry, with atmospheric dew points typically below -40°C.

Fast startup and Simple Operation
MVS Membrane Nitrogen Plants can be turned on and off on-demand with the push of a single button. They only require 5 minutes to start producing high purity nitrogen and there isn’t a need for the unit to be running when you are not consuming nitrogen. This is unlike the cryogenic systems where the unit has to be kept running whether needed or not.

Low Maintenance (no moving parts)
Unlike other Nitrogen generation technologies, Membrane Nitrogen plants in themselves have no moving parts and require minimal maintenance. The feed air cleaning system is the most critical part of the Membrane Nitrogen generator. The membranes require very clean air in order to operate at full efficiency and also to prevent performance deterioration over time. Hence, the filters need to be checked, cleaned, replaced as per MVS recommended maintenance schedule.

Compact & Lightweight

Amongst the various Nitrogen generation technologies, Membrane Nitrogen Generators are the most compact and lightweight. As a matter of fact, smaller capacity Membrane Nitrogen generators including the air compressor can be totally housed in a single panel box with a very small footprint and can be easily kept anywhere on your shop floor.

Fully integrated stand-alone systems
Membrane Nitrogen Generators are built and supplied by MVS as skid mounted, shop assembled units and include all equipments and instruments for generation of Nitrogen gas of specified flow and purity.
Along with the core Membrane unit, a well-designed MVS air feed system consists of:
  • Air compressor system with cooler.
  • Moisture separator with automatic drain and high-level alarm.
  • Air heater to raise air temperature to around 48°C.
  • One coarse and one fine coalescing filter for oil and solid particles removal.
Long life
MVS only uses Membranes from the leading companies in the world and these have been proven a very long life in the field without much maintenance. It has been observed that Membranes life is around 10 years without significant decline in performance.
